Dry cleaning uses a solvent instead of water. That matters because water makes wool shrink, silk lose its lustre and lined garments pull out of shape. A suit, a wool coat or a viscose dress will survive dry cleaning far better than a washing machine, no matter how gentle the programme.

The real difference between one dry cleaner and another is what happens outside the machine. We inspect every garment for stains and damage, treat each stain by hand with a product chosen for that stain type, and finish the garment afterwards by pressing, steaming or form-finishing. That handwork is what gets marks out and what makes a jacket sit properly on the shoulder again.

If you are unsure whether something should be cleaned or washed, bring it in. We read the label, feel the fabric and tell you honestly what will keep the garment in the best condition. Sometimes that is not what the care label says.
