Why curtains should not go in a washing machine
Curtain fabric is nearly always a blend that shrinks in water. Two to five percent sounds harmless, but on a three-metre drop that is six to fifteen centimetres, the difference between reaching the floor and hovering above the skirting board. Shrinkage cannot be reversed.
There is usually a weighted tape in the hem, pleating tape at the top and sometimes a blackout layer. Those layers do not shrink at the same rate as the face fabric, so the curtain pulls or ripples afterwards.
Dry cleaning uses no water. The soil comes out, the fibre keeps its dimensions and the pleats keep their shape. We then press the hem and heading so you can rehang the curtain straight away.

How often should curtains be cleaned?
Every two years is enough for an ordinary living room. With an open kitchen, smoking indoors or a busy street outside, yearly is better. Voile needs it sooner than heavy curtains because the open weave shows yellowing.
There is a practical reason not to wait until they look dirty: fine dust acts like sandpaper inside the fibre. Curtains untouched for ten years are far more likely to tear during their first cleaning.
